The Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, stated at an emergency news conference in Lagos that President Goodluck Jonathan has approved his assassination by security agents for this Saturday, March 28.Amaechi added that the assassination was meant to have been executed by February 14, the first date of the presidential election.According to the governor, the plan to kill him on March 28 was hatched by the director general of the State Security Service (SSS), who has asked for military cover whenever they invade his community in Ubima, Rivers state to assassinate him on the day of the presidential election. Amaechi added that the assassination will be carried out by 30 soldiers from Division 2 led by a Major from Idoma, Benue State. The governor confessed that he was not concerned until the latest information from someone said to have been part of the meeting where the plan was hatched.
“Even yesterday, (Tuesday), the Military had recce in my village. If the president wants me dead, I should let the public know before I am shot dead by the president and his people.
“Citizens are being killed every day. Even those indicted by the police over Okrika killing are still walking the streets free.”
“I know the shooting at Okirika was targetted at me. The Chief of Army Staff and SSS Director, who are from the Southsouth, believe that the second term bid of the President should be a Southsouth agenda.
“People are advising me to travel out of the country. I am being targetted because of my push for change. The president is not too happy. They are conducting polls. But, the actual poll does not favour the president.
“I need the President, the IG, the SSS to guarantee my safety. My security has been depleted deliberately as part of the plot to assassinate me. I have asked for security details, but I have been denied. I have forwarded petitions to the president and the IG. PDP is desperate to win. That is why they are even asking Directors at the Federal Ministries to mobilise for them in their villages.”
While addressing Mohamed Ibu Chambas, the special representative of the United Nations secretary general for West Africa and the high level representative of the secretary general to Nigeria, Amaechi accused Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP of breaching the Abuja peace accord and inciting violence in the country.
According to This Day, the governor also accused Patience Jonathan of taking over control of the police in the state.
“Members of APC have been crying out loud to the country and the world. In Rivers state, the wife of the president, who is from Rivers state has taken over the control of the police force. On Tuesday night, the Commissioner of Police attempted to arrest a member of the state House of Assembly and the reason for doing that is to ensure that APC members don’t come out on election day.
“And as I speak to you now, the lawmaker has moved into Government House for protection. More so, we have over 400 APC members in police detention. The other day, I asked the police commissioner and he told me that those arrested were criminals and why should I ask him to release them. Do we only have criminals in APC?” the governor asked.
“In the same vein, on Tuesday, PDP hoodlums went to the house of the Commissioner of Power, Hon. Augustine Nwokocha with military uniforms and killed his relations, injured others and further burnt down the house of his personal assistant. All these attacks and impunity can measure that the elections can be free, but may not be fair.”
“The APC is not running election against PDP all over the states across the country. The APC is running election against the institutions of government. And they include; the police and the military. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah is from Rivers State. As I talk to you now, he has deployed special military to Opobo/Nkoro local government area where he comes from, and incidentally, the APC guber candidate, Dr. Peterside comes from Opobo. So, you virtually expect resistance and nobody is concerned about the plight of APC. The APC is threatening to go back to the International Criminal Court where the United Nations will witness how President Jonathan and the PDP are using the police and the military to trigger violence,” Amaechi said.
