VDSL2 vectoring uses existing infrastructure to provide fast and economic solution to increasing broadband coverage to meet national Broadband China targets

Shanghai, April 8, 2013 - China Telecom, China’s largest fixed network operator, and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE: ALU) have announced the successful completion of a field test of VDSL2 vectoring technology, Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced solution which allows an existing copper network infrastructure to be adapted to deliver superfast broadband speeds of up to 100 megabits-per-second.

Facing the challenges from the increasing bandwidth demand and the development of BroadBand China, China Telecom is eager to help Internet users increase access capability to high speed broadband services. With this trial, which took place in Foshan, a city in Guangdong province of southern China, enabled China Telecom to evaluate the technology to make speedy and cost effective progress towards achieving the ‘China Broadband’ goals by making the best possible use of China Telecom’s existing copper network infrastructure, the national initiative to deliver high-speed broadband connections to more than 250 million urban and rural homes by 2015.

The use of Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 vectoring complements China Telecom’s national fiber optic data network currently being deployed by Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, the company’s flagship company in China, which is enabling existing DSL customers to enjoy high-speed broadband as part of their current service package.

Key Facts:
  • First field test of Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 vectoring technology in China.
  • China Telecom remains the biggest investor in fiber optical networking in China while striving to maximize the utilization of the existing copper network.
  • VDSL2 vectoring provides speeds of up to 100 Mbps downstream and 40 Mbps upstream while equalizing the quality of transmission between lines of varying quality, delivering consistent service to all customers.
  • Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 vectoring technology has been widely recognized for cost-effectively extending mass-market broadband, and was named ‘Broadband Innovation of the Year’ in the external link2012 Telecom Asia Readers’ Choice Awards.
  • The field test used Alcatel-Lucent’s ISAM-based end-to-end System Level Vectoring solution connected to China Telecom’s broadband access network. It includes the 7302 ISAM and G.vector customer premises equipment.
  • In total, 11 service providers are currently deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 vectoring solutions while more than 40 have been involved in trials.

Quotes:

Rajeev Singh-Molares, President, Asia Pacific for Alcatel-Lucent said: “Alcatel-Lucent believes strongly in the huge potential of VDSL2 vectoring technology to bring higher broadband speeds to more people. Vectoring is a fast and cost-effective complement to optical fiber networks, and allows service providers to speed up broadband deployment to homes and businesses. This successful test with China Telecom has paved the way for Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell to help service providers in China to deliver more broadband, to more people.”
